TRANS-UPDATE: France Conquers Tess!
I now have in my possession a FULL FRENCH TRANSLATION of Serenity Rose Vol. 1: Working Through the Negativity, aka “Tirer Profit Du Negatif,” courtesy of talented and lightning quick Caroline.
Vol. 2 is on its way, too, so it looks like I’ve got a LOT of word-ballooning in my future. (Where was that “ç” key again?)
The entire French-speaking world will soon join the United Nations of Serenity, but who will be next? (I bet it’s Kyrgyzstan!) I was, as you may recall, on a bit of a translating-roll, and then lots of shit happened and I’ve been knee deep in stuff that had to be done and fixed and sickness that just doesn’t seem to go away, doctors who don’t seem to know what they’re doing whatsoever. Body parts were broken and infected and I’m pretty mentally exhausted and trying to fix myself up a bit. I’m still deeply passionate about the gig, but I need to make a full recovery in order to begin translating again. I’m so sorry – really, I am, because I did so enjoy the challenge. I will get back to it, I just need more time.

Despite my shameful shortage of ‘technical terms’, the challenge of «Serenity auf Deutsch» continues to nag at me…. I’ve been thinking of letting one o’ them li’l virtual ear-fishies do a first draft & then attacking the results with my blue pencil.

For a moment there I was tempted to contribute to the german translation, but then I saw the french translation of the book’s title (“Working through the negativity” –> “Tirer Profit Du Negatif”) and suddenly had the bad feeling that I got it all wrong…
Some more seconds with a good translator have me now completely confused, so please someone enlighten me: does “Working through the negativity” really mean roughly “Benefit from the Negativity”? Me was thinking it means something like “getting all this negative stuff streight” or such, but that is definitely not what the french title means. So please don’t leave me stupid.
Yeah, it should be more like “getting all this negative stuff straight.” Silly psychologist-ese phrases like “working through the negativity” are probably a bit tricky to translate, but we’ll see what our Québécoise proofreader has to say!
I am the first to admit that my French is not all that good, but the translator (Caroline?) understood “Working by means of the Negativity”. Well, the English title CAN be understood that way, at least for a non-native speaker like me. That is why I was confused in the first place.
I’m guessing from your comment that you’re a native speaker of German… I’ve studied it pretty intensively, but more from a linguistic perspective than a practical one, and I lack a lot of technical terms & conversational modes. But I know its relationship with English like the back of my hand, and could probably correct (or at least question) any “questionable” translation that came up. I’d think by proofreading each other we could make it damn-near perfect…..
You’re guessing right. And I have to admit that the thought of doing this translation is really tempting, although I don’t know wherre to take the time from. Any idea if there is a deadline?
It has been some time since I read “Working through the Negativity”, and I seem to remember that I had a hard time sometimes to understand it all. But I guess with a little cooperation it should be possible to do this.
The only deadline I can think of is “before somebody else does it first or you won’t get any free stuff”, which is fortunate since I’m awfully slow at getting things done too. NEED MOAR TIME!

p.s. Come to think of it, “WTTN” did have a lot of stream-of-consciousness style in it…. which must be pretty horrific if you’re not *used* to a language with no grammar to speak of!
OH, and by the way, in that title “Negativity” should be thought of as a “barrier” or “hazard” that can only be bypassed with a lot of work, unless you want to take the lazy way and just avoid it and whatever lies beyond. Hope that helps!
Seeing as Freud probably coined the phrase, I’d imagine their *must* be a more-or-less perfect German equivalent….

I’m still working on the Danish translation, amongst all the other things that needs done (school, playing games, etc.!!). I’ve been a little slow at these things, but I will see it through! There’s also some words and terms I need to work out (There’s no “oxymoron” in Danish. 🙁 ), but I’ll wait with that until I got it all translated. Then I can attack the translation in detail properly!
