Emotinal reactions huh? Then a lot of famous paintings as failed being art for me. ^^
I really dislike the whole “what is art?” conversation, cause it feels kinda rude to dismiss something as art just cause I don’t see it as it. It’s almost like “is there a god?” conversation. I know the answear is “NO” but I can’t stop people from hearing voices.
I think having conversations like this can help us fine-tune our own “art” definitions, but it definitely bothers me when people start getting all INFURIATED about different people’s differing definitions of indefinables.
People are STILL hurling great heaps of fury at Roger Ebert for daring to say video games can’t be art a few years ago. How one man’s definition of “art” could possibly work someone into a fury, I’ll never understand, and don’t want to.
Indeed, I don’t really think conversations don’t lead “ANYWHERE”. Someone will probably gain from it and hopefully in a good way. But it is a topic that sneaks into media every now and then about something that make me feel is really tiredsome.
“Anything that has no purpose beyond conjuring an emotional reaction.”
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Troll_%28Internet%29
“…a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community… with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response.”
So, could one say that trolling in some instances is an art?
To take a broader approach, one could simply construe that purposely aggravating someone simply to rile their anger could be considered art.
INTERNET TROLLING: The most horrifying art form since Hitler drew the Seven Dwarfs. http://boingboing.net/2008/02/23/adolf-hitler-disney.html
I was always a fan of Scott McCloud’s definition – how did it go? I think he said art could be any thing or action that didn’t have to do with survival or reproduction. That’s definitely chin-scratch-worthy…
Hey, awesome advice for anyone involved in an unusual art form! : D
Wonderful! I’ve been looking forward to this one. I shall now go about forcing everyone I know to look at it. 😉
(hmmmm….. would THAT be art?) :p
i like this one very much…nice touch with the Mona Lisa…i look at that painting and i just have to smile back at her…for some reason that particular work of art makes me feel hopeful…its weird
The only definition that makes sense to me (or that I can say in less than three hundred words):
Art = short for Arthur.
Although I like Blue Funnies’ definition as well.
It was a slightly silly question on my part, but it is still an interesting one. And who is the best question answerer around? Why, it’s our very own Vicious Whisper!
In any case. I’m just happy that it was answered. It’s a very debate-starting question, and I like discussing it.
Ebert spoke his famous “games are not art” statement before #gamergate. After #gamergate, we can all say that history has vindicated him.
